Conversation with Lyndsey Ingram
Founder of Lyndsey Ingram, Art Gallery
What advice would you give to women starting in the art world?
I think finding your way in the art world is a lot about finding a good balance - you don’t need to be ridiculously aggressive nor should you defer to the many overpowering personalities in the industry. Just hold you course, be brave, and be true to yourself. Also, find some good female role models, colleagues, and mentors. I am so grateful for the women I work with, they have always been incredibly inspiring and supportive.
What qualities motivate you to look at certain types of art/artists or visit a specific museum?
I think it is so important to look at everything - not just work from the periods or mediums that one specialises in. Art History is a very long story and everything is connected, it is important to always be looking. I am especially drawn to things that are well made and presented beautifully. A work of art does not have to be complicated, but it has to be beautiful (though I think beauty has a very broad reach). I really appreciate museums and galleries that take great care in how they present things - it is a sign of respect for the art and for the audience.
Do you feel lucky to do what you do?
Absolutely, I feel lucky every day. It is a pleasure and a privilege to have this job and, even when it is challenging, it is always worth it.
